Is possibly the oldest way to obtain a cooling effect. If certain chemicals and minerals are mixed with water, they get cold. Several nitrous salts and minerals (e.g. Zeolyte) show this effect.

The process may be reversed by drying the substances with heat. Best developed in this category is Zeolyte refrigeration.
